Tourner: rotating decanter for the table

Tourner combines lead-free glass with a rotating base for a distinctive serving presentation. Place it on a firm, level surface and use the rotating mechanism carefully according to the product instructions. Rotation alone does not guarantee improved wine aromas: the wine style, time exposed to air and decanter shape also matter. Compare the broad-based Royal and slimmer Prestige for more traditional designs. Rinse the glass gently with lukewarm water and consult the care instructions before wetting the rotating mechanism.

More about the Tourner Decanter

The Tourner Decanter by Mémoire is a lead-free glass decanter with a rotating base. The decanter is designed to aerate wine while serving as a striking centerpiece on the table. The rotating base distinguishes the Tourner from classically shaped decanters.

Rotating base

The base allows the decanter to be rotated in a controlled manner while it is on the table. This movement gives the wine extra contact with the inside of the decanter and can thus support the aeration process. Rotate gently and in a controlled manner; vigorous movement is not necessary.

For young and robust wines

Young, structured red wines in particular can benefit from extra contact with air. Pour the wine into the Tourner and taste during the process to determine when the wine has opened up sufficiently. Older, delicate wines generally require a more cautious approach and less prolonged aeration.

Use and maintenance

The Tourner measures approximately 25 × 25 × 29 cm and weighs about 500 grams. Rinse the decanter with lukewarm water after use and let it dry completely before storing it. Place the rotating base on a stable, flat surface during use.

Decanting wine explained

Decanting wine means carefully pouring it into a carafe before serving. This serves two important purposes: separating the wine from any sediment and allowing it to breathe . Exposure to oxygen rounds out the aromas, softens them, and adds complexity.

The effect is greatest when the wine is gently agitated. A well-designed decanter increases contact with oxygen, allowing the wine to aerate more quickly and its aromas to develop more fully.

Step 1: Prepare the wine

Stand older wines upright before opening the bottle to allow sediment to settle to the bottom.

Step 2: Pour into the carafe

Pour slowly and carefully, leaving the sediment in the bottle. For younger wines, you can pour a little more vigorously to add more oxygen.

Step 3: Let the wine breathe

After pouring, let the wine rest for a while.

  • Young wines: 15–30 minutes
  • Old wines: 10–15 minutes

Step 4: Enjoy the result

Decanting removes sediment, allows the wine to breathe, and enhances both aroma and flavor. This allows each wine to reach its full potential – exactly as the winemaker intended.

FAQ

What is the purpose of decanting?

Decanting separates the wine from any sediment and allows it to breathe. This releases aromas more effectively, resulting in a smoother, fuller flavor.

How long should you decant wine?

Young red wines usually need 15–30 minutes to decant. Older wines are best decanted for a shorter period to preserve their delicate aromas.

Which wines benefit most from decanting?

Especially full-bodied red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Some full-bodied white wines can also benefit from a little aeration.

Can you decant wine for too long?

Yes. Too much oxygen can weaken the flavors and aromas, especially in older wines. Therefore, decant these wines just before serving.

How exactly does a decanter work?

A well-designed decanter increases the contact between wine and oxygen. Gently swirling or moving the wine aerates it more quickly, allowing its aromas to fully develop.
