A wine opener for everyday and fragile corks

Élitaire combines a spiral with two slim blades placed alongside the cork. This can be useful for those who regularly open older bottles and want additional support around a delicate natural cork. Always inspect older corks and avoid forcing the mechanism.

Prefer not to pierce the cork at all? See the Deux Dents two-prong opener or browse our full corkscrew collection.

Élitaire or a classic waiter's corkscrew?

Élitaire combines a spiral and two thin blades, offering different ways to grip a natural cork. A waiter's corkscrew uses a spiral and lever. For very fragile corks, also compare the Deux Dents without a spiral.

Which opener for a brittle natural cork?

The 2-in-1 mechanism is convenient for standard corks and provides an alternative grip for delicate ones. For severely crumbling cork, a pure two-prong opener may be preferable. Never force a weakened cork or damaged glass.

Élitaire or Deux Dents for older wine?

Deux Dents grips the cork along its sides without drilling into it, whereas Élitaire also has a corkscrew spiral. Compare both in our wine opener collection.

More about the Élitaire wine opener

The Élitaire by Mémoire is a two-part stainless steel wine opener. It combines a spiral that twists into the cork with two thin blades that slide between the cork and the bottle neck. Both parts support the cork during opening. This makes the Élitaire a targeted choice for wine lovers who also open older bottles with fragile natural corks.

Spiral and two blades work together

A standard corkscrew pulls the cork up via the spiral. A 2-pronged opener grips the cork from the outside. With the Élitaire, these techniques come together: the spiral provides grip and the blades provide support on the sides. It is therefore a different technique than that of a waiter’s friend with a lever.

That extra support is especially relevant when a cork has become brittle due to age. The condition of the cork remains the deciding factor: even with a suitable opener, such a bottle requires patience. Work without sudden pulling force and do not force the blades if you feel significant resistance.

Using the Élitaire step by step

  1. Remove the capsule so that you can clearly see the cork and the edge of the bottle neck.
  2. Carefully twist the spiral into the center of the cork.
  3. Insert the longer blade between the cork and the glass. Then slide the shorter blade in on the other side, using small, gentle movements.
  4. Hold the bottle steady and pull the cork upward with a gentle twisting motion.

The opener measures 12 × 2 × 1 cm and weighs 200 grams. After use, remove any cork residue, clean the parts carefully, and dry them before storing the opener.

Which opener suits your bottles?

For many young wines, a waiter’s friend is sufficient. If you regularly open older wine, the combination of spiral and blades can be a valuable addition. Read how different wine openers workor view all Mémoire wine openersto compare the techniques.

Explanation of use

Opening a bottle of wine seems simple, but each opener has its own technique and purpose. Using the right tool protects the cork and preserves the quality of the wine.

The waiter's knife

The classic and most widely used opener — compact, precise and reliable.

  1. Cut the capsule below the edge of the neck.
  2. Place the spiral in the center of the cork.
  3. Use the two-step lever to smoothly pull the cork.

A favorite of sommeliers for the craftsmanship and control it offers.

The two dent opener

Designed for older wines with a brittle cork.

  1. First slide the longer blade, then the shorter blade along the cork.
  2. Gently rock the opener back and forth.
  3. Pull up slowly while holding the bottle still.

The cork remains intact — ideal for bottles that have been resting for years.

The Elite Opener

An advanced opener that combines the best of both worlds.

  1. Place the opener on the cork and carefully twist the spiral.
  2. First slide the longer blade, then the shorter blade along the cork.
  3. Pull upwards with a gentle, circular motion; the cork will come out straight and undamaged.

This method offers maximum control, even with delicate or rare wines.

FAQ

What's the best way to open a wine bottle?

Use an opener appropriate for the type of wine and the condition of the cork. Always work slowly and straight to prevent the cork from breaking or falling into the bottle.

What is the difference between a waiter's knife, a deux dent opener, and an Élitaire opener?

  • A waiter's cork is versatile and suitable for almost any bottle. This wine opener also always has an integrated serrated blade and a crown cork opener.
  • A deux dent opener is used for old bottles with fragile corks.
  • The Elite opener combines both technologies for maximum control and safety.

When do I use a deux dent opener?

In wines that have aged for a long time, the cork can become brittle. The deux dent opener removes the cork without piercing it, minimizing the risk of breakage.

What makes the Elite opener special?

The Elite opener uses both a spiral and two thin pins. This keeps the cork stable, even in older or difficult-to-open bottles. The movement is controlled and effortless—ideal for those who value precision.

Do I need different openers?

Not necessarily. For young wines, a waiter's knife will suffice, but if you frequently open older bottles, a deux dent or Élitaire opener are valuable additions.
