Why choose the Royal wine decanter?

The Royal is suited to anyone who wants to aerate wine in a wide-based carafe while adding a distinctive serving piece to the table. The 1.7 L hand-blown vessel comes with a cork ball for covering the opening and stainless steel beads to help clean hard-to-reach areas.

Want to leave the carafe to drain on a matching rack? View the Royal Decanter & Drying Rack Set or compare our other decanters.

Comparing decanter designs? The Montagne Decanter (1.6 L) features a mountain-inspired design, while the Infinité Decanter stands out for its curved spiral shape. Compare the designs to find a decanter that suits your table and the way you serve wine.

Royal decanter or drying-stand set?

The individual Royal includes the 1.7 L carafe, cork ball and stainless-steel cleaning beads. For easier draining after rinsing, compare the Royal set with a matching stand. A stand does not replace cleaning.

Does a standard wine bottle fit?

Yes. The Royal holds 1.7 litres, leaving ample room for a normal 750 ml bottle. Its wide base exposes a greater wine surface to air.

Royal or the slimmer Prestige?

The Royal has a broad base for aerating, while the Prestige (1.5 L) has a slender profile for gentle pouring. With older wines containing sediment, careful decanting may matter more than prolonged aeration.

Royal as a wine gift

Its design and cleaning beads make Royal a distinctive choice for a wine lover; a set with drying stand may suit someone buying a first decanter. Explore our wine gifts.

More about the Royal Decanter

The Royal Decanter by Mémoire is a hand-blown decanter with a wide base and a cork ball. The carafe has a total capacity of 1.7 liters and is 24 cm high. It makes for a tranquil centerpiece on your table: you decant the wine from the bottle and serve it from the carafe.

A wide base for air contact

The wide base spreads the wine over a larger surface area. This gives the wine more contact with air than in an opened bottle. For a young, robust red wine, this can help make the aroma and taste more accessible. The time required varies per wine; taste as you go instead of sticking to a fixed waiting time.

The total capacity of 1.7 liters does not mean you have to fill the carafe completely. When decanting a standard 750 ml bottle, there is plenty of space above the wine. If you want to separate sediment from an older wine, pour slowly and stop as soon as the deposit reaches the neck of the bottle. Do not expose a delicate, aged wine to unnecessary air.

How to use and care for the Royal

  • Pour the wine gently along the inner wall and check the development of the aromas as you go.
  • Use the included cork ball as a cover while serving; the carafe is not a replacement for long-term wine storage.
  • Rinse the carafe with lukewarm water after use. Use the included stainless steel cleaning beads carefully to clean hard-to-reach areas.
  • Rinse the beads and the carafe thoroughly and let both dry completely before storing.

Decanting wine explained

Decanting wine means carefully pouring it into a carafe before serving. This serves two important purposes: separating the wine from any sediment and allowing it to breathe . Exposure to oxygen rounds out the aromas, softens them, and adds complexity.

The effect is greatest when the wine is gently agitated. A well-designed decanter increases contact with oxygen, allowing the wine to aerate more quickly and its aromas to develop more fully.

Step 1: Prepare the wine

Stand older wines upright before opening the bottle to allow sediment to settle to the bottom.

Step 2: Pour into the carafe

Pour slowly and carefully, leaving the sediment in the bottle. For younger wines, you can pour a little more vigorously to add more oxygen.

Step 3: Let the wine breathe

After pouring, let the wine rest for a while.

  • Young wines: 15–30 minutes
  • Old wines: 10–15 minutes

Step 4: Enjoy the result

Decanting removes sediment, allows the wine to breathe, and enhances both aroma and flavor. This allows each wine to reach its full potential – exactly as the winemaker intended.

FAQ

What is the purpose of decanting?

Decanting separates the wine from any sediment and allows it to breathe. This releases aromas more effectively, resulting in a smoother, fuller flavor.

How long should you decant wine?

Young red wines usually need 15–30 minutes to decant. Older wines are best decanted for a shorter period to preserve their delicate aromas.

Which wines benefit most from decanting?

Especially full-bodied red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Some full-bodied white wines can also benefit from a little aeration.

Can you decant wine for too long?

Yes. Too much oxygen can weaken the flavors and aromas, especially in older wines. Therefore, decant these wines just before serving.

How exactly does a decanter work?

A well-designed decanter increases the contact between wine and oxygen. Gently swirling or moving the wine aerates it more quickly, allowing its aromas to fully develop.
